First grade scientists have excitedly continued their exploration of the world of matter! After we learned all about the properties of solids, we started to investigate liquids. Through our research, we found that liquids are different from solids in a lot of ways. They don't have their own shape, and they are types of matter that flow and that we can pour. Here are some scientists observing different types of liquids.
Then we started to wonder...were there ways to change matter? Could we take a liquid and turn it into a solid? After some brainstorming we decided that if we put liquid water in the freezer...it would become a solid. It worked! I then challenged scientists to find a way to turn their solid back into a liquid. We headed outside where the "hot sun" was and melted those ice cubes!
We also discovered that we could make all sorts of new matter...just by mixing solids and liquids together. Here our scientists are making their very own sidewalk chalk...and using that chalk to become artists!
Finally, we spent this week exploring gases! We realized that gases are all around us...like air and bubbles in soda! After a very exciting Mentos and Diet Coke explosion, we observed what happened when bubbles in soda (gas) and raisins (solid) interacted. We noticed that the gas would attach to the raisins and bring them to the top of the cup...only to pop and have the raisin sink to the bottom!
We also made a mystery liquid mixture and explored what happened when we blew a gas into that liquid. We made bubbles!! Check it out!
