1st graders have started our final project for the year and we couldn't be more excited! Throughout this project, students will be exploring these questions:
*What is wind?
*How can wind help?
*How can we design and engineer our own kites?
We launched our project a few weeks ago with a paper airplane extravaganza! Without any specific steps or instructions to follow, students had 30 minutes to design, test, and build paper airplanes. Then we launched them from the second story balcony inside HTe, before taking them across to the park to fly in the wind. Student engineers worked so well together to build their airplanes and had a great time flying them! After this launch, we began our investigation into wind. We researched what causes wind and conducted an investigation at the park to determine what types of objects the wind will move. This will help kite engineers better decide on materials for their kites!
In addition to our project learning, 1st graders have been growing as mathematicians as well! Expanding on their strong understanding of place value (tens and ones), students began exploring the 120 chart and understanding how to quickly add 10 more or subtract 10 less from any number! This skill is helping to prepare mathematicians for higher level addition that they will encounter in 2nd grade!
I want to send out a BIG heartfelt thank you to all the families that have been spreading the word about our iFly fundraiser! As of this morning, $1,466 has been donated...almost 60% of the way to our goal! Please keep sharing and donating...I know we can do it!
