First Grade Readers
Introducing children to the world of literature and encouraging their exploration and enjoyment of it is one of the best parts of teaching first grade!
First grade readers will…
*Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story
*Show understanding of a text's main idea or message
*Make predictions about a story and check those predictions
*Use different strategies when reading (using picture clues, chunking the word, etc.)
*Decode grade-level appropriate words, both in isolation (i.e., flashcards) and in text (i.e., books)
*Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency (fluency=read like you would talk...with expression!) to support comprehension
