First grade is truly where my heart is, and experiencing it here at HTe is so rewarding! You might be wondering about project-based learning in first grade. Here is a peek at what we have in mind!
Projects are an amazing way to enrich student learning and to encourage authenticity in student work. We believe that the primary grades (kinder, 1st, 2nd) lay the foundation for a very rich, project-based learning environment. With that in mind, we will help first graders develop their ability to:
*use the elements of critique to improve their work *wonder about the world around them *share ideas and actively listen to others *work collaboratively with partners/small groups *build their independence and problem-solving skills *demonstrate the High Tech High 5 *understand that they are part of a community; that communities have norms and expectations; and that each member is valued.
*TAKE RISKS. LEARN FROM MISTAKES. MEET FAILURE WITH PERSEVERANCE.
That sounds awesome! What else?!?
First grade is a year of incredible growth for little learners! While our projects certainly help to develop foundational skills (as well as social and emotional maturity), first graders thrive with a lot of exposure and repeated exploration of essential skills and concepts.
