First graders have been so busy becoming experts on 'how we can live to be healthy.' We have spent the past two weeks exploring all sorts of different topics related to our health. First graders started their exploration by illustrating a plate full of whatever food they wanted...there were lots of doughnuts, cake, and brownies!! Then we looked at the "healthy plate" and realized that there a lot of different kinds of food we should be eating to keep our bodies healthy! This week we really investigated fruits and vegetables. We learned how they can help our bodies and why they are so important to have on a healthy plate. Students also polled their classmates to find out what fruits their friends like to eat...and then they made bar graphs! We finished the week with a fruit and vegetable taste test! Students were encouraged to sample cucumber, pineapple, carrots, raspberries, bell peppers, and kiwi...and then record whether they liked it or not! As you can imagine...some were much more popular than others!
First graders also learned about how our hearts and lungs help our bodies...and more importantly, how WE can help our hearts and lungs! Next week will see first graders explore other important food groups and other parts of our body that we can help to take care of! Check back soon!
