As 1st grade scientists continue their exploration of matter, we discovered something really interesting. We realized that by mixing together different types of matter, we could create something completely new! We have spent time these past few weeks mixing together solids, liquids, and sometimes even gases to create fun activities like play dough and bubbles. Take a look!
We also had an amazing 1st Grade Adventure Day at Cuyamaca State Park! The entire first grade community spent the whole day adventuring in nature. After eating lunch together, students rotated through three activities...a nature scavenger hunt, a hike, and habitat building. First graders had a blast learning about local plants and animals. Ask your first grade adventurer more about seeing a woodpecker, deer footprints, and coyote scat, or more about how they built a habitat out of natural materials!
1st grade mathematicians have continued their exploration of place value! We started our learning with a lot of hands-on activities that helped us to see that many numbers are made up for groups of tens and ones (for example: 54 is 5 groups of ten and 4 ones). Once that became a less abstract concept, mathematicians began representing numbers with different math manipulatives and we have even begun comparing numbers and using language like greater than and less than.
